Autonomous
Reshaping the Mining Industry
The Autonomous Haulage System (AHS) is a comprehensive fleet management system for mines.
The autonomous haul truck, jointly developed by Komatsu Ltd., Komatsu America Corp. and Modular Mining, is centrally controlled through a wireless network that integrates:
- On-board vehicle controllers
- High-precision global positioning
- Obstacle detection and avoidance systems.
The system has full supervisory logic that utilizes complex data fusion to control the dump truck to safely operate through a load, haul and dump cycle and allow integration with other mine vehicles such as light vehicles, dozers, loaders, and graders.

Unrivaled Excellence: Modular Mining and Komatsu
The synergy between an OEM and fleet management system must extend beyond an interface, especially when you start assuming full control of a haul truck weighing over one million pounds interacting in fleets where manned vehicles and driverless trucks coexist.
Independent providers applying a “bolt on” solution without OEM knowledge could undermine the entire system, compromising equipment integrity and risking major liability issues.
Komatsu uses a best-in-class approach, bringing together the proven 930-AT ultra-class haul truck with Modular’s industry-leading haulage optimization and mine management systems to deliver a world-class autonomous solution.
A Safe and Proven Record in Active Mines
1990
Komatsu (Modular Mining’s parent company) entered the autonomous field, 6 years before commercial GPS was available.
2002
In support of Komatsu, Modular patented its bi-directional autonomous haul truck concept.
2008
Following the successful trial evaluation of five Komatsu 930E-AT driverless haul trucks, the Komatsu Autonomous Haulage System (AHS) was implemented commercially for the first time in the world.
- The system, which incorporates Modular technologies, was installed at a Chilean copper mine, marking the initial use of AHS vehicles in an open-pit environment.
Today
After more than a decade of in-pit operational experience, Komatsu and Modular Mining have collaboratively moved more than two billion tons of total surface material worldwide. Today, the Autonomous Haulage System serves as yet another example of Modular’s proven ability to deliver high value and cutting-edge solutions.
